Description : Along the entire length of the road, the wilderness begins at the edge of the gravel, observes one guidebook writer, and many travelers take advantage of this, venturing off the right-of-way to hike or paddle. Others are content to admire the sweeping vistas from the road. Even here, the possibility of spotting Dall sheep, grizzly and black bears, moose, wolves and animals from the 120,000-strong Porcupine Caribou Herd is quite real. Along the way, there are also opportunities to discover the fascinating culture of the Gwitchin people who have inhabited the land for millennia, as well as to delve into the highly dramatic history of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the region. And, of course, the novelty of crossing the Arctic Circle at 66° 33’ N and entering a world of near-perpetual daylight is one that few summer travelers ever forget.
