Description : A wildly spectacular landscape. That simple description goes a long way towards explaining the unexpected appeal of the Dempster Highway to recreational motorists and even ambitious cyclists. While the road has certainly contributed to northern resource development since it was opened to traffic in 1979, it has also provided access to the scenic riches of the Tombstone, Ogilvie and Richardson Mountains. More than 15,000 vehicles now travel this isolated route each year—no huge number by southern standards, but enough to hint at some truly unique rewards.
