Description : As early as 1884, settlers began coming to the area, primarily because the Carlton Trail, extending from Fort Garry to Edmonton, passed just south of Wakaw. However, immigration became more rapid in the early 1900s, for the Canadian governments goal was to populate western Canada. Within one decade, this area was settled by a youthful, hard-working, and determined population.

Wakaw grew to village status in 1911 and to town status in 1954. Wakaw is an Indian word meaning Crooked Water - a term which describes the lake adjoining the towns eastern boundary.
