L'anse Aux Meadows National Historic Site, Newfoundland, Canada 14

Description : Come to the place where history began. More than one thousand years ago, the first Europeans to set foot on North American soil landed at L,Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. While en route to Greenland, a crew of Norsemen were blown off course and landed here. The reconstructions of three Norse buildings are the focal point of this archaeological area, the earliest known European settlement in the New World. The archaeological remains at the site were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Exhibits highlight the Viking lifestyle, artifacts, and the archaeological discovery of the site. Visitors can also explore the hiking trails to nearby bays and lakes.
