The Spirit of Haida Gwaii by Bill Reid CM11-23
Description |
: |
World-renowned Vancouver architect Arthur Erickson was designing a new Canadian Embassy in Washington and he asked Bill Reid to think about a sculpture to adorn the courtyard. In 1985, Reid was commissioned to produce his concept of a canoe filled with mythical creatures for the Embassy, and the sculpture was donated to the Government of Canada by Nabisco Brands Canada in 1991.
Inspired by 19 th century argillite carvings of miniature canoes thronging with animal and human passengers, Reid constructed a 1/6-scale clay model of The Spirit of Haida Gwaii in the spring of 1986. He then enlarged the Haida canoe carrying 13 mythological Haida figures to a full-scale clay model, before the sculpture was cast in plaster over an armature of steel rod and mesh for further refinement.
This maquette was shipped to the Tallix Foundry in Beacon, New York, in 1989, where it was cast in bronze (the original plaster is on view at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Québec). The casting was given a glossy black patina to give the appearance of argillite. The Spirit of Haida Gwaii was completed and installed in 1991. Subtitled The Black Canoe, it is Bill Reid’s largest and most complex work of sculpture. The Spirit of Haida Gwaii is a monumental sculpture in bronze: 6.05 m long, 3.9 m high, 3.5 m wide, weighing 4,900 kg.
The Vancouver International Airport Authority commissioned a twin, with green patina to evoke the dark emerald green jade found in British Columbia. The Jade Canoe was completed in 1994 and installed in the international terminal building at the airport. |
